FMCSA modernizes registration system for motor carriers and freight brokers

C.H. Robinson government and regulations update

United States

On Monday, October 21, the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration (FMCSA) hosted a third listening session as they modernize the registration system for new motor carriers and freight brokers. They announced the launch of a website hub to stay up to date on the proposal and provide feedback regarding the proposed improvements. View full FAQs about the update. Some of the highlights include:

  • The sunsetting of MC numbers and the focus on USDOT numbers for primary identification
  • Assignment of either a valid, suspended, or revoked USDOT number in association with a new safety registration status
  • Required identity verification through the same system used at TSA airport security for each principal party registering a new entity. This will include matching a photo of the individual with their ID photo.
  • A new business verification protocol in addition to identity verification with goals to significantly reduce fraud and cargo theft
  • Centralized correspondence between FMCSA and the registrant through the new portal rather than relying on regular U.S. postal mail

Some new processes will require a rulemaking notice by FMCSA, but identity verification may begin before the end of the year. The overall goal is a launch of the new system sometime in 2025.

All presentations from this meeting will be posted on the registration modernization resource hub.
