Understanding efficiencies, reducing carbon footprints

At C.H. Robinson, sustainability is important. We work to create efficient supply chains. This is not only smart for business, but also reduces waste, decreases carbon emissions, and will make the world around us better for generations to come. To make an impact, we must all work together. That is why our corporate sustainability initiatives focus on making improvements within our company, with our customers and carriers, and on the transportation industry as a whole.

Corporate sustainability

C.H. Robinson will reduce our carbon intensity 40% by 2025 over our 2018 baseline numbers. We will find energy efficiencies within our facilities, leverage renewable energy, invest in renewable energy certificates (RECs), and participate in offset projects, including:

  • Gold LEED certification in our largest operating facility in Chicago, IL
  • Single sort recycling in our offices, resulting in 120 tons of waste being saved from landfills at our headquarters over the course of one year
  • Paperless invoicing for customers, with a goal of going 100% paperless
  • Carbon Fund offsets for all European employee business travel

ESG reporting

We regularly report on environmental, social, and corporate governance (ESG) issues through several public channels, including the CDP, EcoVadis, Vigeo Eiris, RobecoSAM, MSCI, and Sustainalytics.

Customer and supplier sustainability improvements

C.H. Robinson is in a unique position to help our customers develop waste reduction plans and help them execute on the plan. Our teams work on network, inventory, and transportation models for customers that improve service, reduce costs, and cut carbon emissions.

1 Business model

When it comes to truckload, intermodal, and ocean services, we help customers leverage headhaul and backhaul capacity. By recommending load and mode optimization strategies, customers successfully reduce empty miles and effectively utilize transportation equipment. This contributes to the reduction of unnecessary carbon emissions.

When it comes to less than truckload (LTL) freight, we carefully match freight with carriers that receive the greatest yield value to create more fully utilized trailers.

2 Modes and services

Our customers and suppliers have unique sustainability goals. Some seek to use a lower carbon-emitting mode of transportation or utilize consolidation services to reduce number of shipments. Others leverage reverse logistics services, want to align LTL freight with the best carrier to reduce waste, or use a network analysis to help minimize inventory and transportation miles.

Our global suite of services provides customers with many opportunities to reduce waste and find efficiencies.

3 Scope and scale

Our global suite of services helps our customers, contract carriers, and suppliers gain supply chain efficiencies that reduce emissions.

Thanks to our scale, we help customers grow their business reliably and sustainably using data science. With more available data than any other logistics provider, along with predictive tools, our customers can leverage our information advantage to make smarter, efficient decisions that contribute to their overarching sustainability goals.

4 Reporting capabilities

Through reporting and analytics, we provide customers with clear visibility to their supply chain’s carbon footprint and year-over-year changes. These capabilities include recommendations on supply chain carbon reduction opportunities.

And thanks to our experienced team of more than 1,000 data scientists, engineers, and developers, we continually gather data and insights our customers, contract carriers, and suppliers can use to further their sustainability initiatives.
