In a major sustainability milestone for the logistics industry, C.H. Robinson has become the first company to participate in RailGreen, the first carbon insetting program for rail freight in the world.

The program, launched by Norfolk Southern, allows customers to reduce emissions from rail shipments by investing in the use of verified low-carbon fuels like biofuel and renewable diesel. Rather than offsetting emissions elsewhere, RailGreen focuses on direct, in-network reductions—a growing priority for companies under pressure to reduce their carbon footprint.

Rachel Schwalbach, Vice President of ESG at C.H. Robinson told The Atlanta Journal-Constitution, “For so long the conversation with customers was about price and time. And really, we’re seeing customers are looking to add in that carbon sustainability as a third strategic datapoint.”

RailGreen is part of a broader shift in the freight industry, as shippers face increasing expectations from boards, investors, and regulators to align their supply chains with climate targets. As the first mover, C.H. Robinson is integrating the program into its broader alternative fuels program—available to shippers globally across all modes, enabling its customers to leverage low-emission supply chain solutions.

With rail already offering significantly lower emissions compared to other modes such as truckload or air, RailGreen gives customers an opportunity to go even further. For companies seeking innovative, science-aligned ways to meet emissions targets, the program marks a meaningful step forward.
