UPDATED: Winter storm across U.S. Gulf Coast brings closures and delays

Winter weather impacts remain across the U.S. Gulf Coast region as of Wednesday morning and have spread as far east and north as Virginia. Road closures are impacting traffic flow and capacity across the region due to snow and ice accumulations. Expect closures at shipping and receiving facilities and transportation terminals to continue as extreme cold will not allow for ice and snow melt for much of the impacted area.

TRUCKLOAD
Traffic delays from snow and ice build ups continue in Texas, Louisiana, Mississippi, Alabama, Florida, Georgia, and the Carolinas. Temporary capacity constraints may continue through the end of the week in the path of the heaviest impacts.

LTL (LESS THAN TRUCKLOAD)
Limited service and some terminal closures across the Gulf Coast region will impact both inbound and outbound freight. This disruption in service could cause delays into next week as terminals catch up with the backlog.

CROSS BORDER
After icy road conditions in Northern Mexico, intermittent closures of the World Trade Bridge and Interstate 35 being closed in Laredo, Texas, on Tuesday, cross-border freight flows have returned to normal on Wednesday. C.H. Robinson’s cross-docks in Laredo are operating as usual.

INTERMODAL
CSX Atlanta and Canadian National New Orleans terminals were closed Tuesday with plans to reopen as soon as conditions allow. Intermodal shipments moving in the region will see some delay due to these closures and impacts on trucks handling first and last mile moves. At rail terminals where there are delays in picking up containers, chassis availability may be limited.

OCEAN
The Ports of Houston, New Orleans, Mobile, Charleston, and Virginia remain closed Wednesday. The port of Savannah Garden City truck gates will reopen at 1pm Eastern Wednesday, however Ocean Terminal truck gates will remain closed.

AIR
Cargo at major airports including Houston, Atlanta, and Charlotte may experience some delays.
