Eden Prairie, Minn. (May 4, 2017) — Orangetti squash, a vivid-orange gourd that is low in calories and carbohydrates, is in its first full season at Robinson Fresh®.

This offering comes at a time when ease of consumption is a priority and spaghetti squash consumption is on the rise. The produce category at retail grows in low single digits each year (2.2 percent in sales volume in the last year), but items like the Orangetti Squash are contributing to the high growth seen in Spaghetti Squash, which was up 11.3 percent in volume over the same time period according to IRI Fresh data.

The squash was trialed in the Robinson Fresh Product Development Centers in both Davis, California and Tifton, Georgia for multiple seasons as well as other locations in North America and Mexico. Trialed against other squash varieties, the Orangetti genetics fared exceptionally well in the company’s chosen growing regions.

  • From an agronomy perspective, it proved to be a winner in multiple growing regions.
  • The company’s current spring supply will journey from Mexico to the southeast U.S., providing squash well into June.
  • The variety is available in both organic and conventional offerings.

Orangetti is unlike other squashes as it has unique preparation and eating qualities. To prepare, slice Orangetti in half lengthwise, roast with cut sides face down in a 400 degree oven for 25-30 minutes until tender and gently shred and scoop out the interior flesh. The low-carb consumer is dedicated to keeping their sugars low, and the pasta-like tendrils of the squash can be dressed up with pesto or marinara to suit consumer taste preferences. The easy-to-prepare, easy-to-serve utility has increased the variety’s success.
